Shopping for Kids in Times Square

If you thought dozens of famous cartoon character imitators walking around 42nd Street was enough to entertain toddlers, wait until they visit the Toys R Us Store in Times Square.

This has to be the biggest store of its kind with a Ferris wheel in the center and a Willy Wonka Candy Factory.

Toys R Us in NYC is a three-story establishment.

Spiderman is on site ready to take pictures with children.

Geoffrey the Giraffe, which is the Toys R Us mascot welcomes and sends off customers through the main entrance.

Hello Kitty has an entire wall to itself.

There are plenty on New York themed toys like the New York Barbie and toy yellow cabs of all sizes.

Plus, if you buy any Bronx Zoo themed toys, you are contributing 5% of the sale to help wildlife.

But just when you thought Toys R Us in New York City’s Times Square was everything, you walk a few blocks to Rockefeller Center and there's the Lego Store!

And a few streets over from the Lego Store is the American Girl doll store.

Si pensaron que los imitadores de famosos personajes de Disney caminando por la calle 42 en la ciudad de Nueva York, bastarían para entretener a los pequeños, esperen hasta que visiten la tienda Toys R Us en Times Square.
Esta tiene que ser la tienda más grande de su tipo con una rueda de la fortuna en el centro y una fábrica de dulces Willy Wonka.
Toys R Us en Nueva York es un establecimiento de tres pisos.
El hombre araña esta a la orden para tomarse fotografías con los niños.
Geoffrey la jirafa, que es la mascota de la juguetería saluda a los clientes en la entrada principal.
Hello Kitty tiene una pared entera de productos, ropa y juguetes.
Hay una variedad de juguetes de Nueva York como la Barbie de Nueva York y juguetes de taxis amarillos de todos tamaños.
Además, si usted compra juguetes temáticos del zoológico de Bronx, está contribuyendo el 5% de la venta para ayudar a los animales.
Pero justo cuando se va convenciendo de que la tienda Toys R Us en Times Square de Nueva York es lo máximo, camina unas cuantas cuadras al Rockefeller Center ¡y se encuentra con la tienda de Lego!
Y a otras dos calles más de la tienda de Lego, esta ubicada la tienda de muñecas American Girl.

Disneyland's Soundsational Parade- A Treat for Toddlers

Benny and I were giddy and goofy around Disneyland earlier this year dressed up as Goofy himself!

The most memorable event from this particular visit though, was watching my little boy get super excited while watching the Soundsational Parade.

The Soundsational Parade premiered at Disneyland in May 2011.

Mickey Mouse leads the parade as the head drummer in a purple float shaped to look like his profile. And joining him down below are Minnie, Pluto, Chip & Dale and Goofy.
This year (in June), a new float was added to the parade following the mega success of the movie Frozen, with Snow Queen Elsa waving at spectators while Olaf and Anna play in the snow.
My little Benny couldn’t stop pointing and shouting with excitement, almost as if he was telling the Disney characters along the parade route that he recognized them from his movies at home!
To close the parade, Mary Poppins and Bert pass by in beautiful single jumping carousel horses.
Now, Disney changes up their parades every few years. It’s probably a good idea to make sure you watch the Soundsational parade before it’s gone.

I’ll warn you though, the theme song of the parade is so sticky, you’ll end up singing it on your drive home.

Benny y yo nos divertimos bastante durante una visita a Disneylandia en la cual Benny fue vestido de Tribilin, mejor conocido como “Goofy”.

Pero lo más memorable de este viaje fue ver a mi pequeño hijo emocionarse tanto con el desfile “Soundsational”.

El desfile Soundsational se inauguró en Disneylandia en mayo de 2011.

El ratón Mickey Mouse encabeza la caravana como el principal baterista en un carruaje diseñado como su perfil.

A Mickey lo acompañan Minnie, Pluto, las ardillitas Chip y Dale y Goofy.

Este año, incorporaron al desfile un nuevo carruaje tras el gran éxito de la película “Frozen” con Elsa, la reina de la nieve, su hermana Anna y el famoso hombre de hielo, Olaf.

Mi niño no dejaba de apuntar y gritar con emoción, como si le estuviera exclamando a los personajes que los reconocía de sus películas.

Para cerrar el desfile con broche de oro, Mary Poppins pasa con su amigo Bert en caballos de carrusel.

Ahora, importante mencionar que Disney cambia los desfiles de vez en cuando así que si no han disfrutado este desfile, más vale que lo hagan antes de que lo descontinúen. Ah pero eso sí, les advierto que la canción del desfile es demasiado pegajosa y es muy probable que la terminen cantando en su camino a casa.

An Evening at the National Zoo in Washington DC

It was very nice to visit the Smithsonian National Zoo with my son and parents one summer evening.

Abuelo and Mama Lupita dressed Benny as a little Safari Explorer and off we went!

Since the zoo is run by the Smithsonian, admission is free!

The zoo grounds are landscaped beautifully and there are many activities for small children along the way. The animal exhibits are well-kempt with excellent reading material and information at each stop. But on this particular outing, there were hardly any animals out…

We only saw a fishing cat, two pandas, an elephant and a giant salamander but we walked a whole lot!

Still, a great time was had by all.

Benny seemed more excited by the freedom to run around and the Dots ice cream he had, than he did over watching the panda bears chew on bamboo leaves!

Fue muy agradable visitar el Zoológico Nacional de Smithsonian con mi hijo y mis padres una tarde de verano reciente.

Abuelo y Mamá Lupita vistieron a Benny como un pequeño Explorador de Safari y nos fuimos!

Siendo que el zoológico está dirigido por el Smithsonian, la entrada es gratis!

Los jardines del zoológico están hermosos hay muchas actividades para los niños pequeños a través del recorrido. Las exhibiciones de animales ofrecen excelente material de lectura e información en cada parada. Pero en esta excursión casi no vimos animales..

Sólo vimos un gato pescador, dos pandas, un elefante y una salamandra gigante, pero caminamos muchísimo!

Aún así, disfrutamos de una linda tarde.

Benny parecía estar más emocionado por la libertad de correr y el helado “Dots” que le compramos que por estar en la presencia de los fascinantes osos panda.

Product Highlight: Reflo Training Cup (Toddler Tuesday)

On several occasions Benny has tried to drink out of a cup and has failed in a very messy fashion.

Trying to teach toddlers how to drink out of a regular cup when they’re pretty attached to their bottles/sippy cups— is not easy.

But I recently discovered a unique plastic cup that was created to address this very issue.

It’s called a “smart cup”, created by Reflo, an American company based out of Ohio. The product description says the cups are BPA & phthalate free and an “alternative to ‘sippy’ cups which have been associated with speech and dental issues in children”.

It contains a rounded plastic mechanism that locks around the circumference of the cup and helps  control the flow of the liquid through tiny zigzag openings.

It’s a great starting point. Benny used it and we had a spill-free dinner!

En varias ocasiones Benny ha intentado beber de un vaso y ha fallado con tiraderos de jugo por todas partes.

No es fácil enseñarle a los niños pequeños a beber de un vaso normal cuando están impuestos a sus botellitas.

Sin embargo, recientemente descubrí un vaso de plástico único que se diseñó para hacer frente a este asunto.

Se llama el "vaso inteligente", creado por Reflo, una empresa estadounidense con sede en el estado de Ohio. Product Review - The Difrax Pacifier (Toddler Tuesday)

Benny shouldn’t really be using a pacifier anymore.

But it’s a comfort item for him and since I’m not currently home to wean him off and help him get used to a pacifier-free life, the best I could do was accept the fact that he’ll be continuing to use one this summer.

Next was finding the best pacifier on the market for my little boy.

Benny ya no debería estar usando chupón.

 Pero es un objeto de consuelo para él y como no estoy en casa para ayudarlo a dejar la dependencia y acostumbrarse a una vida libre de; chupón, lo mejor que pude hacer fue aceptar el hecho de que va a continuar utilizándolo este verano. Luego busqué el mejor chupón en el mercado para mi hijito.

 Encontré “Difrax Ortodóntico” que parece ser la respuesta. Está hecho para estimular el desarrollo de los músculos del paladar, la lengua y la mandíbula.

También deja mucho espacio para la nariz de Benny, que es muy importante, especialmente en los días cuando sus alergias se apoderan y necesito asegurarme de que esté respirando adecuadamente mientras duerme.

Build-A-Bear, New York City

Benny’s first trip to a Build-A-Bear Workshop was during a recent trip to New York City.
We were walking toward the St. Patricks’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue when his eyes met with the colorful, whimsical, lively world of teddy bears and he immediately asked to be taken inside.
My first thought was, “Do I really want to spend $50 on a bear?”
But Benny was so drawn to the stuffed animals that I couldn’t help the cuteness.
He picked his bear, handed it over to a stuffing specialist and even gave it a heart.
Then he scrubbed and bathed his bear and I picked the outfit – A New York Yankees baseball uniform.
Then we had to register the darn toy on a computer in order to print a birth certificate!
Benny wanted to do the same so I sat him at a computer station and enjoyed every minute of my son’s happy cheer.
I named the bear “Yankee Bear” and he’s been Benny’s best friend since…
Benny cuddles with him in his crib and holds him in his car seat and my heart melts and melts over and over.
In the end, the total cost for the bear, with accessories including a baseball mitt & ball, was right around $40. But I’m convinced that if there’s a Build-A-Bear Workshop that was going to be worth our time and money, the one we visited in New York City was it! In one word, the store was: grand.

El primer viaje de Benny a la tienda “Build-A-Bear” sucedió durante un viaje reciente a Nueva York.
Íbamos caminando por la quinta avenida rumbo a la Catedral de San Patricio cuando los ojos de mi niño se encontraron con el mundo colorido, juguetón y divertido de los ositos de peluche e inmediatamente nos pidió que lo lleváramos dentro.

Mi primer pensamiento fue que jamás gastaría 50 dólares por un oso de peluche para Benny 

Pero Benny estaba tan interesado en los animalitos de peluche que no pude contenerme con tanta ternura. Benny escogió su peluche, se lo entregó a una empleada para que lo rellenara y hasta le puso un corazoncito. Luego lo bañó, lo talló bien con el cepillito y yo me encargue de seleccionarle su vestimenta que fue un uniforme de los jugadores de béisbol de Nueva York “New York Yankees”

Luego teníamos que registrar al famoso juguete en una computadora para luego imprimir su certificado de nacimiento.

Benny quería hacer todo lo que hacía mamá así que lo senté en una computadora y disfruté mucho al observar a mi hijito que según escribía a máquina…

Nombramos al osito “Yankee Bear” y este se ha convertido en un querido amiguito de Benny.

Benny lo abraza en su cuna y lo carga en el asiento del carro y solo de ver eso, se me derrite el corazón.

Al final del recorrido resultó que el costo total del oso ni siquiera superó los 40 dólares con todo y un guante de béisbol y una pelotita.

Estoy convencida que si tarde o temprano habríamos llevado a Benny a esta tienda, no hubo mejor localidad que la de Nueva York para hacerlo. La tienda “Build-A-Bear” de Nueva York está increíble.
