DIY Bear-themed Advent Calendar

The first advent calendar was apparently made in Germany back in 1908 by a man named Gerhard Lang. When Gerhard was a little boy, his mother decorated a piece of cardboard and stuck 24 little candies on it at the beginning of December.

As a grown man, he decided to make one himself and created an advent calendar with 24 little doors that opened. It marked the beginning of the Christmas Season and provided a countdown to Christmas Day.

Today, Advent Calendars are everywhere and too darn cute to ignore when shopping for Holiday decorations.

Since we’re having a ‘Beary’ Merry Christmas theme at home, I got a little ambitious and decided to make my own bear-themed advent calendar.

It turned out a little disproportionate but the glittery details make up for it.

I used a burlap board as the body of the bear and made the daily countdown with paper cutouts, featuring red cherries (since Bears are known to love berries and they can pass for mistletoe berries!!), gold and black glitter paper and silver glitter number stickers.

The most time-consuming part was cutting all the elements to put this together.

Drawing and painting the bear face was actually the easiest thing.

And now we countdown to one more day before Christmas!

I printed a bunch of cherries (downloaded from Clipart) and used brown wrapping paper for the bear's head, legs and arms.

I use household items whenever possible, like this glass to trace a round muzzle.

The gold glitter rectangles were unevenly cut (freehand), and they worked fine.

Pushpins hold up the individual countdown dates.

El primer calendario de adviento se hizo en Alemania en el año 1908 por un hombre llamado Gerhard Lang . En una ocasión a principios de diciembre cuando Gerhard era niño, su madre decoró un pedazo de cartón y le pegó 24 dulces pequeños.

Años después, ya de adulto, decidió hacer uno calendario de adviento con 24 pequeñas puertas que se abrían . Esto marcaría el inicio de la temporada de Navidad y proporcionaría una cuenta regresiva para el día de Navidad .
En la actualidad, los calendarios de adviento están por todas partes y demasiado lindos como para ignorar al ir de compras de decoraciones navideñas .
Y siendo que estamos celebrando un Día de Navidad muy CuriOSITO,  en vez de comprar uno, me puse un poco ambiciosa y decidí hacer mi propio calendario de adviento – con temática de oso.
Resultó un poco desproporcionado pero los detalles brillantes compensan por las imperfecciones de mi Osito.
Utilicé una tabla de arpillera como el cuerpo del oso e hice la cuenta regresiva con recortes de papel brillo de color oro y negro, calcomanías de números plateados y con cerezas rojas (ya que a los osos les encantan las bayas y estas podrían pasar por bayas de muérdago !! ) .
La parte más tediosa de este proyecto fue cortar todos los elementos de papel en la tabla.
La pintura de la cara del oso fue en realidad lo  más fácil .

DIY 'Beary' glittery Clothespin Christmas Card Display!

Well, if we would be decorating for the Holidays with bears everywhere, we should better get 'beary' creative with our Christmas Card display, I said to myself one early December evening.
And so using tools and materials I already had in my craft locker, I punched circles out of gold glitter paper in three different sizes. I used the largest circles as heads and glued googly eyes on them; the medium ones as ears and the small ones as muzzles. The small circles were punched out of light yellow cardstock so I could draw a snout and mouth on them. And that's how the bear heads/faces were made.
Then I glued tiny clothespins to the backs of my glitter bears.
While those were drying, I tied burlap string from each end of a repainted glass shelf that I'm currently using for another DIY project (to be completed in the Spring).
When the glue used to seal the clothespins to my glitter bears was finally dry, I used the glitter bears to hang my Christmas cards along the burlap string, making all the sweet holiday wishes from friends and family sparkle just a little brighter!
Oh my goodness... two days before Christmas and I still have so much to share... just not enough time to blog!

Si íbamos a decorar para Navidad con ositos por todas partes, habría que ponernos muy creativos y curiOSITOS con nuestra exhibición de tarjetas navideñas. Eso fue lo que pensé una tarde a principios de diciembre.

Y así me puse a ver qué materiales tenía en casa para iniciar este proyecto.

Corte círculos de papel brillo color oro con cortadores en tres tamaños diferentes . Utilicé los círculos más grandes como las cabezas y les pegué ojos saltones; los círculos medianos como las orejas y los círculos pequeños como bozales. Los círculos pequeños  fueron perforados de papel de cartulina color amarillo porque en ellos, dibuje los hocicos de los ositos. Y bien, así fue como hice estas cabezas de ositos.

Luego pegué pequeñas pinzas de la ropa detrás de mis ositos brillantes y mientras que estos se secaban, até hilo de arpillera de cada extremo de un estante de vidrio pintado que estoy usando actualmente para otro proyecto (que espero completar  en la primavera).

Cuando el pegamento se secó  y las pinzas quedaron bien sujetadas a la parte posterior de mis ositos de papel brillo, los tomé para colgar las tarjetas navideñas que recibimos del hilo y así se lucieron las tarjetas un tanto más.

¡Ay caray ... dos días antes de Navidad y todavía tengo mucho que compartir ... simplemente no me alcanza el tiempo para bloguear mucho!

Bear-Themed Candy Treats

By now, you've probably noticed that we're celebrating a Bear-themed Christmas at home...LOL!
The idea behind it is not really deep or thought-provoking. It's simply that my mom and I came across a great bargain on bear-themed ornaments and decorations a while back and whaddaya know? We've got a Christmas theme!
I will say, however, this is probably the best year to have a "Beary" Merry Christmas theme because at two years old, my son Benny loves bears! He cuddles with a stuffed bear every night and has a special liking for plush bears, so yeah our Bear-themed Christmas seems especially appropriate for 2014.
With that said, we went to my brother-in-law's annual cookie swap over the weekend and I started running out of time and energy to bake so I found this cute idea for a bear-themed dessert.
They're cookie bears riding in chocolate Cadillacs (or Station Wagons).
Aren't they cutesy?

Ingredients:
*Snack Sized Snickers/Milky Way chocolate bars
*Chocolate Cake Frosting
*M&Ms (I used Holiday-colored M&Ms)
*Teddy Grahams (I used Honey flavored Teddy Grahams)

Instructions:
Once you've taken the chocolates out of their packaging, place on a tray or dish to begin.
First, you take each snack-sized chocolate and spread a little bit of chocolate cake frosting on each corner edge, then you stick the M&M's over the frosting to serve as wheels. The chocolate frosting camouflages to the chocolate bar.
Then you cut off the Teddy Graham legs and once that's done, dip the Teddy Graham into the chocolate frosting, which will serve as glue so you can place it on top of the chocolate bar.
And that's all you need to create a sweet Christmas bear driving a holiday vehicle!

Small dabs of chocolate cake frosting on the edges so that the M&Ms or "wheels" can stick

This one was hilarious...Bear was being swallowed by Tornado vehicle!

This bear refuses to use the steering wheel...LOL!

Quizá ya se dieron cuenta de que estamos celebrando un Día de Navidad muy CuriOSITO en casa este año (risas)!

La idea detrás de esta temática no nada profunda. Se trata simplemente de que mi mamá y yo  encontramos con una gran oferta en los ornamentos y decoraciones de osos hace tiempo y PUF! Tenemos Navidad de muchos osos…jajaja

Pero he de decir que probablemente sea el mejor año para tener un Día de Navidad muy CuriOSITO, porque a los  años de edad, mi hijo Benny ama los osos ! Se acuesta con su oso de peluche todas las noches y tiene un gusto especial por los ositos de peluche, así que un Día de Navidad muy CuriOSITO parece ser especialmente apropiado para el 2014.

El fin de semana pasado, nos fuimos a casa de cuñado a la fiesta de galletas que organiza cada año y cuando me di cuenta que no me alcanzaba el tiempo para hornear y preparar unas galletas ricas como se debe hacer, fui y busque ideas para un buen postre con temática de osos .

Me encontré estos ositos que viajan en Cadillac de chocolate (¿o serán vagones?).

En fin, ¿verdad que están cómicos?

Ingredientes:

* Chocolate Snickers miniatura / barras de chocolate Milky Way, también de tamaño miniatura.

* Glaseado para pasteles, sabor a chocolate.

* Chocolates M & Ms (yo utilicé los de colores navideños )

* Galletas Teddy Grahams (Utilice las de sabor a miel)

Instrucciones:

Una vez que hayas sacado los chocolates del paquete , colócalos  en una bandeja o plato para empezar .

En primer lugar, se toma cada chocolate y se embarra un poco de glaseado de pastel, sabor a chocolate  cada esquina del chocolate. Entonces  se pegan los M & M sobre el glaseado, que serán las llantas del vehículo.  El glaseado de chocolate hace que se pierda el color y así sobresalen las llantas.

Luego se cortan las piernas de las galletas de ositos “Teddy Graham” y una vez hecho esto, se introduce lo que queda de la galletita  al glaseado de chocolate, que servirá como pegamento para que pueda colocar en la parte superior de la barra de chocolate.

Y eso es todo lo que se necesita para crear un oso muy dulce, en su vehículo navideño!
