DIY Dr. Seuss Cat Hats & Bowties for Toddlers

I made Benny a hat to match the one worn by the Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and it was very easy to make.
Only six materials are required to make it.
It's not too fancy and I didn't bother making a top for it but it looked whimsical enough to match Benny's Dr. Seuss Valentine's Day theme.

Materials:
1- Disposable plate (either paper or styrofoam)
1- 11x17" white foam sheet
3 - two-inch strips of red paper (I used foil tissue paper)
Scissors
Glue gun
Tape

First you cut out the center of the plate. Make sure the hole is just a tad bigger than the circumference of your child's head.
Then you fold the foam sheet to lock perfectly inside the hole of the paper plate.
Once it's positioned, glue the foam sheet together so it locks in place.
Pull the foam sheet about two inches from the bottom of the plate and cut one inch strips all around.
Fold the strips over and glue to the bottom of the paper plate.
Cut three strips of red paper (about 2 in. wide) and tape around the hat, about an inch and a half apart.
Trim the top part of the hat since the top color is supposed to be red.
All done!
I also made a Cat in the Hat bowtie. See pictures below :)

You can use a paper or Styrofoam plate for the base of the Cat hat



Once the paper is fitted perfectly inside the plate, glue along the edge

Pull from bottom of the plate and cut strips all around 

Fold the strips down and glue to the bottom of the plate

I cut the strips free hand but you can use a ruler to cut them neatly and even

I simply taped the red strips around the hat

For the bowtie, I drew the shape, free-hand, on red felt fabric

Once I drew it to my satisfaction, I folded the felt fabric and cut two bowties. Then I glued them together to make it sturdier.

I added a heart in the center to make it Valentiney!

Le hice a Benny un sombrero para que coincidiera con el sombrero del gato del libro “Cat in the Hat” escrito por Dr. Seuss.

Para hacer uno similar, sólo se requieren seis materiales.

No es muy elegante ni lo hice con demasiado cuidado, pero se veía bastante agradable y un poco chistosón y le quedó muy bien, sobre todo porque estaremos celebrando el Día de San Valentín al estilo de Dr. Seuss.

materiales:

1- plato desechable (puede ser de papel o de espuma de poliestireno)

1- hoja de espuma blanca de 11x17 pulgadas

3 - tiras de dos pulgadas de papel rojo (yo utilicé papel de papel de seda)

tijeras

pistola de pegamento

cinta adhesiva

Cortar el centro del plato. Asegurarse de que el agujero sea un poco más grande que la circunferencia de la cabeza del niño.

Doblar la hoja de espuma para bloquear la apertura del plato y para que quede perfectamente bien encajada dentro de esta.

Una vez que se coloca a la medida del agujero, pegar las orillas de la hoja para que la hoja tome la forma de la parta alta del sombrero.

Jalar el papel de espuma aproximadamente dos pulgadas de la parte inferior del plato y cortar tiras todo alrededor del papel.

Doblar las tiras para unirlas a la parte inferior del plato y pegarlas con pistola de pegamento.

Cortar tres tiras de papel rojo (de 2 pulgadas de ancho cada una) y colocar alrededor del sombrero, uniendo las orillas con un pedazo de cinta adhesiva. Esto se hace dejando alrededor de una pulgada y media entre cada tira.

Si al pegar las tiras rojas, sobra papel blanco en la parte superior del sombrero, recorte lo blanco para que el rojo quede como el color superior, tal como el del gato.

¡Listo!

Como habrían visto en las fotos anteriores, también hice un corbatín parecido al del gato pero con un corazón de brillos en el centro.

The Exquisite Los Angeles Cookie Convention & Sweets Show

Last year I got wind that there would be convention in Los Angeles dedicated to everything and anything related to cookies & sweets...
I couldn't help my curiosity and bought a ticket.
I'm not a baker or a pastry chef, by any means of the imagination. I'm just a mommy who sometimes tries to make yummy things in the kitchen to make her boys smile.
But I'll tell you one thing: after this Cookie Con, I'm inspired to spend waaaay more time in the kitchen making & baking "yummies" (Benny's term for edibles he likes).
The convention itself was held at the Pasadena Convention Center.
Among the highlights: live fondant decorating demos, organic & edible nail polish for little girls, beef jerky with hints of candy, Brigadeiro (Brazilian chocolate balls) and cookies of all shapes & flavors.
As always, I'll leave you with a small glimpse of a few of the beautiful, sweet, pink & pastelish looking treats and desserts that I was swooning over.
I won't tell you how many varieties of desserts I tried... but I'll say this much: if you plan on attending next year (it's a one-day affair), make sure you workout in the morning before the Cookie Con AND in the evening... The consumption of so much deliciousness can only be justified if you plan for a double workout!

El año pasado me enteré de que habría una convención en Los Angeles dedicada a todo relacionado con galletas y postres...

No pude evitar la curiosidad y compré un boleto.

No soy panadera o chef de repostería. Nada que ver…Sólo una mamá que a veces trata de hacer cosas ricas en la cocina para hacer sonreír a su esposo e hijo.

Pero les voy a decir una cosa: después de esta convención de galletas, me siento inspirada para dedicar más tiempo en la cocina horneando "yamis" (término de Benny para las comidas que le gustan).

La convención de galletas se celebró en el Centro de Convenciones de Pasadena.

Entre los aspectos más destacados de esta reunión: demostraciones de decoración de fondant, esmalte de uñas para niñas orgánico y comestible, carne seca con toques de caramelo, Brigadeiro (postres de chocolate de Brasil) y galletitas de todos sabores y colores.

Aquí les dejo con una pequeña muestra de algunas de las lindas golosinas, postres, galletas y dulces que estaban en exhibición.

No les voy a decir cuántas variedades de postres comí ... pero si planean asistir el próximo año (es evento de un solo día), asegúrense de hacer ejercicio en la mañana antes de la convención y en la noche ... Solo así se puede justificar el consumo de tanta exquisitez…

6 Good Reasons to Celebrate Valentine's Day at Knott's Berry Farm

Who would've thought Knott's Berry Farm was so, so, cute!?
I hadn't been to "America's First Theme Park" in over a decade but something told me it was time to return...and so I did, with my 2-year old companion on board!
The trip turned into a great mommy and son date, especially as Valentine's Day approaches and Paul and I won't be around on February 14th to hug our little rascal (we're going away for the weekend).
Knott's Berry Farm is clean and the grounds are well-kempt. There are great places to eat and so many fun things to do.
Here are six reasons why parents should consider this theme park as a Valentine's Date destination with the kiddos.

1. Knott's Berry Farm has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen Foundation through March 27 to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. If you purchase a "pink" ticket, you will get a discounted park pass and 75% of the "pink" ticket sales are donated to the foundation

2. Even on a holiday weekend, the lines are never over 20 minutes to get on children's rides. That was my experience.

3. You can indulge in a sweet dessert for two or five. Benny and I had the ginormous but delicious Churro Sundae from the Gourmet Churro Factory. A must have if you go to Knott's!

 4. There are Valentine's Day decorations and trinkets for sale throughout the park, like bows and hand-painted signs at Mrs. Doolittle's Boutique. There are also plenty of Peanuts character gifts in shades of pink. It makes the outing extra Valentiney!

5. You can take vintage photos with your little one(s) at the Pitchur Gallery in Ghost Town. Benny and I had tons of fun dressing up. He was a cowboy. I was a Saloon girl. He cried when it was time to surrender his pistol and remove his outfit...LOL.



6. The park has two entrances to make it more convenient for people who weren't able to find a spot in the main lot. The park's west entrance is very accessible for folks who had to use the alternate parking lot.

¿Quién hubiera pensado que Knotts Berry Farm era tan chévere!?

No había visitado el "Primer Parque de Atracciones de América" en más de diez años, pero algo me decía que era hora de regresar ... y así lo hice, con mi compañerito de 2 años de edad!

El viaje se convirtió en un excelente día de actividades para mamá e hijo, y como el Día de los Enamorados está a la vuelta de la esquina y mi esposo y yo nos vamos a unas cortas vacaciones, no estaremos cerca del traviesillo el 14 de febrero, razón por la cual esta salida al parque Knott’s con mi niño valió la pena.

Knotts Berry Farm es un parque limpio con bonitos jardines. Hay buenos lugares para comer y muchas cosas divertidas que hacer.

Aquí les presento cinco razones para que tomen en cuenta este parque temático como destino para celebrar la Fecha de San Valentín con los pequeñines.

1. El parque se ha asociado con la Fundación Susan G. Komen y hasta el 27 de marzo estarán recaudando fondos para la concientización del cáncer de mama. Si usted compra un boleto "rosa" , obtendrá un pase al parque con descuento y el 75% de la venta de los boletos color de rosa se donará a la fundación

2. Incluso en los fines de semana, las filas para subir a los juegos de niños nunca tardan más de 20 minutos. Esa fue mi experiencia en un sábado de fin de semana feriado.

3. Puede disfrutar de un delicioso postre para dos o cinco. Benny y yo comimos el gigantesco pero exquisito helado de Churro del “Gourmet Churro Factory”, algo que deben probar si visitan Knott’s!

4. Hay decoraciones de San Valentín y cositas lindas a la venta por todo el parque, como signos pintados a mano en la boutique de la Sra. Doolittle. Esto hace que la salida tenga el tono del Día de San Valentín!

5. Puede tomarse fotos de épocas pasadas con su pequeño(s) en la galería de fotos “Pitchur Gallery” en la zona “Ghost Town” del parque. Benny y yo nos divertimos un montón vistiéndonos. Él fue un vaquero y yo una dama de cantina. El Benny lloró cuando llegó el momento de quitarse el traje ... RISAS .

6. El parque tiene dos entradas para que sea más conveniente para las personas que no pudieron encontrar estacionamiento en el lote principal. El segundo estacionamiento esta convenientemente ubicado cerca de la segunda entrada para no gastar tanto tiempo caminando a la puerta principal del parque.
