Since Father’s Day is this weekend, I have to take a moment to share a little bit about my father.

I’m Juan Francisco Marquez’s oldest daughter.

I also happen to be the one who shares most of his personality traits.

This means my dad and I easily fluctuate from being best friends, to quickly disagreeing on something and acting equally stubborn.

But my dad’s overall positive influence has been such that words can’t describe how grateful I am for having him in my life. He is my beloved “papi”.

Ever since a young age, my dad taught his three daughters to be free, responsible, passionate and expressive! He is a natural leader who always found a way to provide for his family and make us feel safe even if that meant taking risks, moving us around and making sacrifices to secure a better future for us.

There is really no better way to describe him than the “anchor” of the Marquez family— one who gave us stability and security to stay afloat always.

So with this “anchor” theme in mind, I started brainstorming Father’s day gift ideas for him and also considered the fact that post-retirement, he pursued his dream of becoming a tour guide. He currently leads groups of people to explore the world by air, land and sea.

I thought about getting him a vintage compass or something symbolic like that, but on a recent trip to Macys I discovered an awesome men’s fragrance by Nautica and it all came together!

I bought him the Nautica Life gift set, selling for only $65, which comes with a 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette, 2.5 oz Aftershave Balm, 2.5 oz. Shower Gel, and 1 oz. Eau de Toilette. I figured he could use a nice set of cologne products, especially as a man of action and a leader who’s building connections around the world.

Then I got home and decided to display his gift in a DIY cardboard vintage ship (instead of wrapping it or placing it inside a gift bag). This way, I would showcase my nautical gift with Nautica Cologne and explain the meaning behind it all!

I should mention that I found the Nautica Life gift set on a tower located in the men’s cologne section at Macys. The fragrance is quite pleasant with hints of ginger, sage, lavender and Hinoki Wood (a type of Japanese cypress).

To make a similar gift box sailboat, you will need:

1 large cardboard box

Scissors

Tape

Paint

Drinking straws

Colored paper for the sails (I used gold glitter paper)

You only need a total of five cardboard cutouts. Two long pieces serve as the ship's side panels. These are the ones with the round cutouts, which are supposed to be scuttles (round windows). The piece between the side panels will serve as the deck. To the left side there is a square-shaped piece which will be the back panel and finally, the pointy cutout will serve as the base.

Once you have your cardboard cutouts, it's all just a matter of piecing everything together with tape.

Once you start taping, the ship will start to take its form and don't worry about the tape, the paint will cover it perfectly.

I chose to give this cardboard ship a golden-green tone but you can paint the cardboard any color!

Please excuse my painted fingers! For the mast, I simply used straws. In order to add length to the mast all I did was pinch one end of a straw and introduce it into another straw. They lock into place this way.

The ship's sails came in the form of gold glitter paper. For this, I poked small holes at the ends of the paper and pushed the straw through. The key here is to make sure you don't extend the paper to give it the pirate ship sail effect.

Faltan sólo unos días para el Día del padre no podía desaprovechar esta oportunidad para compartir un poco sobre mi papá.Soy la hija mayor de Juan Francisco Márquez. También soy la que comparte la mayoría de sus características de personalidad. Esto significa que mi padre y yo fácilmente podemos cambiar de mejores amigos a un acalorado desacuerdo con la misma obstinación. Sin embargo, la influencia que ha tenido mi padre sobre mi vida, ha sido tal que las palabras no podrían describir lo agradecida que estoy con mi amado "papi".

Desde muy chicas, mi padre nos enseñó a sus tres hijas a ser libres, responsables, apasionadas y !expresivas! Él es un líder natural que siempre encontró la manera de mantener a su familia y hacer que nos sintiéramos seguras, incluso si eso significaba tomar riesgos, mudarnos y hacer sacrificios para asegurar un futuro mejor para nosotras. Realmente no hay mejor manera de describirlo como el "ancla" de la familia Márquez, alguien que nos dio la estabilidad y seguridad para mantenernos siempre a flote de la vida.

Así que con este tema de "ancla" en mente, empecé a tener lluvia de ideas para su regalo del día de padre y también consideré el hecho de que después de su jubilación, persiguió su sueño de convertirse en un guía de viajes. Actualmente encabeza grupos de personas a explorar el mundo por aire, tierra y mar.
Pensé en comprarle algo como un compás antiguo por el simbolismo a los viajes pero en una vuelta reciente la tienda Macy’s, descubrí una fragancia impresionante para hombre de la marca Nautica y ¡todo cuadró en mi mente! Le compré el conjunto “Nautica Life” regalo que está la venta por sólo $65, y que viene con un Eau de Toilette de 3.4 oz, loción para después del afeitado de 2.5 oz; Gel de Ducha de 2.5 oz y una colonia más pequeña de 1 oz. Me imaginé que le serían útiles estas fragancias, sobre todo como un hombre de acción y líder en viajes construyendo conexiones por todo el mundo.
Luego llegué a casa y decidí mostrar su regalo haciendo un velero de cartón (en lugar de envolverlo o colocarlo dentro de una bolsa de regalo). De esta manera, le mostraré el regalo náutico con el conjunto de fragancias de la marca Nautica y así le explicaré el significado detrás de todo esto!
Debo mencionar que encontré el juego de regalo “Nautica Life” en una torre ubicada en la sección de fragancias de hombres en la tienda Macys. La fragancia es bastante agradable, con toques de jengibre, salvia, lavanda y madera de Hinoki (un tipo de ciprés japonés), entre otros.
