It's called Japanese Lolita Fashion.
It involves adult women dressing up as dolls and wearing the most adorable dresses with petticoats, colored pantyhose, stuffed animal shaped purses and pink and pastel colored wigs.
For some, this style may seem borderline silly.
Let's be honest here, watching someone walk a busy street looking like a Victorian-era themed porcelain doll with white and pink platform Mary Janes would probably make for great amusement... BUT... I've always been a supporter of freedom of expression and for whatever it's worth, this popular Lolita Fashion promotes youthfulness and is pretty, very creative and easy on the eyes!
Recently, I stumbled upon a small boutique in Downtown Los Angeles that sells Lolita style clothing and accessories (I hope to get permission to showcase the store for a future blog entry).
The lovely cashier described the merchandise as "Fantasy & Fairytale Fashion" and that's when I decided to look into this trend.
According to my research, the fashion style first emerged in the late 80's and has evolved greatly since then. It's a blend of styles from a variety of eras, with the Victorian-era being the most recognizable among the trend.

Hay una popular tendencia de moda en Japón que está creciendo y enloqueciendo a las mujeres. Se llama la Moda Lolita.
Se trata de vestirse como muñecas y usar vestidos adorables hasta con enaguas, medias de colores, bolsitas de animales de peluche y pelucas rosas y de colores pastel.
Para algunos, este estilo puede parecer algo ridículo.
Y es que, hay que ser honestos, diganme si ver a alguien caminar por las calles con un traje de muñeca de porcelana de la época victoriana y con zapatos blancos de plataforma no sería una buena atracción...? PERO ... Siempre he sido defensora de la libertad de expresión y por si de algo sirve, les diré que esta popular Moda Lolita promueve la juventud, es bonita, muy creativa y fácil de apreciar!
Recientemente, encontré con una pequeña boutique en el centro de Los Ángeles que vende ropa y accesorios estilo Lolita.
La agradable cajera describió la mercancía como "Moda de fantasías y de cuento de hadas".
De acuerdo con lo que pude averiguar sobre esta moda, en realidad surgió por primera vez a finales de los años 80 y ha evolucionado mucho desde entonces. Es una mezcla de estilos de una variedad de épocas, con la época victoriana siendo la más reconocible entre la tendencia.
