If you have fond memories (like I do) of the now-defunct Woolworth’s Discount Stores, then you’ll be glad to hear they were the first to ever sell Christmas ornaments in the United States. That’s because the founder of Woolworth’s, Mr. Frank Winfield Woolworth, was reportedly the first American to import the festive, little decorative spheres from Lauscha, Germany!
Yes, the colorful glass balls we love to hang from our Christmas trees every year were invented in Germany by a guy named Hans Greiner in 1847. His first ornaments were shaped like nuts and fruit since people actually used food to decorate their trees back then.
Once their popularity grew throughout Europe, Mr. Woolworth caught on to the trend and brought the baubles over the states (and made a fortune by importing them).
Nowadays it’s hard to find a genuine ornament made in Germany since they are mass produced in China, Mexico and even the U.S. but I think I should make that one of my goals for 2014 – to visit Germany and purchase an authentic glass-blown ornament.

Si eres como yo y recuerdas las tiendas “Woolworth’s” con cariño, entonces te alegrará saber que éstas fueron las primeras en vender las esferitas de navidad en los Estados Unidos. Eso se debe a que el fundador de las tiendas Woolworth (que ya no existen), el Sr. Frank Winfield Woolworth, fue el primer americano en importar los adornos redondos, originarios de Lauscha, Alemania.Sí, las bolitas de vidrio que nos encanta colgar de nuestros árboles de Navidad fueron inventadas en Alemania por un hombre llamado Hans Greiner en el año 1847. Sus primeras esferas se hicieron en figura de fruta y nueces ya que en ese entonces la gente usaba esos comestibles para decorar sus árboles.Una vez que la popularidad de las esferas se expandió por todo Europa, el Sr. Woolworth se percató de la tendencia y pronto trajo las esferas a los Estados Unidos (e hizo una fortuna haciéndolo).Hoy en día es difícil encontrar una esfera autentica hecha en Alemania, ya que por lo regular se fabrican en China, México e incluso en EE.UU., pero creo que lo haré uno de mis objetivos para el año 2014 - visitar Alemania y comprar una esferita de vidrio autentica.¡Frohe Weihnachten!
