The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Mommy Blogger Event

Maintaining a blog while working full-time, attending to a husband and raising a child is a bit complicated, to say the least. Sometimes sitting down to write a post requires skipping on washing the dishes…or making the bed (like tonight). But to me, it’s worth it.

Now imagine how I felt when I received an invitation directly from Warner Brothers because someone there found my blog and thought I’d be a good fit to attend a most amazing media event for a movie that I’m crazy excited about watching!

It’s exactly what happened and I was very stoked when I got the invitation to The Hobbit VIP Blogger Event.

So I’m at the fabulous Beverly Hilton mingling with other mommy bloggers and enjoying a most delightful lunch when the two guys who play dwarves Kili and Fili in the Hobbit Trilogy stop by to meet with us and take a few questions. Actors Aidan Turner and Dean O’Gorman were so much fun to listen to! They pretty much vented about how heavy their costumes felt during some of the scenes but they loved taking the required combat training, including archery, to prepare for their roles!

Then we got a private tour of “The Book of New Zealand” an incredible bigger-than-life pop-up book exhibit highlighting gorgeous settings from the movie’s numerous filming locations. The Hobbit’s production designer, Dan Hennah wanted people to know that what you see on the big screen is authentic.

“We want to show that the huge epic sweeping backgrounds in the movie are real places, not computer-generated backgrounds,” he said.

And so we entered this incredible book and pretty much went on a journey through the epic fantasy film. First, we were met with a giant statue of Thror (dwarf king) set in Hidden Bay (Turoa, Ohakune – New Zealand).

Then we ventured to Lake Pukaki, Mt. Cook (setting for Lake Town). Filming at this location was apparently a massive operation with almost 700 people on set. Wowzah!

Beorn’s House filmed in Paradise, Queenstown – New Zealand was my favorite. I learned it took six weeks to build and create this gigantic home and fortress for only three days of filming! By the way, Beorn is a character— huge in size and known to be a “skin changer” who could assume the appearance of a big black bear.

Costumes used in the film were also on display at this event and as if the experience itself hadn’t been marvelous enough, all mommy bloggers were treated to a wonderful gift bag at the end of the tour.

It's opening weekend for the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And it’s looking like it will be a hit at the box office. If you’re wondering whether or not to watch it, I will simply repeat the words of a fellow blogger who said this is a must-see flick for moms because it touches on the themes of loyalty, survival, mental strength, dealing with adversity and fighting for what is right.

And if you’ve never heard of the Hobbit, know that it all started as a book written by English writer, J.R.R. Tolkien. The first paragraph in the book reads like this:

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort.”

The extraordinary story that unveils following this introduction is simply tremendous and the movie is guaranteed to prove it.

Mantener un blog mientras se trabaja a tiempo completo, se atiende a un marido y se cría a un hijo es un poco complicado, por ponerlo así. A veces, sentarme a escribir una entrada requiere ignorar los quehaceres como el de lavar los platos y tender la cama (como lo hice el día de hoy) . Pero para mí, este pasatiempos vale la pena.

Ahora imagínense como me sentí cuando recibí una invitación directamente de Warner Brothers porque alguien en el departamento de publicidad encontró mi blog y pensó que sería buena idea invitarme a un evento promocional para una película que estoy loca por ver.

Eso fue exactamente lo que sucedió.  Me dio muchísimo gusto cuando recibí la invitación para el evento VIP para Bloggeras de la película The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Así que llega el día del evento y me encuentro de plácemes en el fabuloso hotel Beverly Hilton platicando con otras madres bloggeras y disfrutando de una comida deliciosa cuando los dos chicos que interpretan el papel de los enanos Kili y Fili en la trilogía de las películas Hobbit llegan parar reunirse con nosotras y contestar un par de preguntas. ¡Me entretuve bastante escuchando a los actores Aidan Turner y Dean O'Gorman! Los dos se desahogaron un poco sobre lo pesado que fue portar sus trajes durante largas horas de actuación en algunas de las escenas, pero dijeron que les encantó tomar los entrenamientos de combate requeridos, como el de aprender el tiro con arco.

En seguida tuvimos un tour privado de "El Libro de Nueva Zelanda" una increíble exposición enfatizando los majestuosos escenarios y lugares que se utilizaron para el rodaje de la película. El diseñador de producción de la película, Dan Hennah quería que la gente supiera que lo que se ve en la pantalla grande es auténtico."Queremos demostrar que las grandes escenas de batallas épicas en la película son lugares reales, no son fondos generados por computadora, " dijo.

Y así entramos a este libro fascinante y fuimos conociendo los sitios de la película. En primer lugar, nos encontramos con una estatua gigante de Thror (rey de los enanos), ubicada en Hidden Bay (Turoa , Ohakune - Nueva Zelanda).

Después nos aventuramos hasta el lago Pukaki, cerca del Monte Cook (conocido en la película como Lake Town). Al parecer, la filmación en este sitio fue una operación masiva con cerca de 700 personas presentes. 

La casa de Beorn filmada en el Paradise, Queenstown - Nueva Zelanda fue mi favorita. Aprendí que les tomó seis semanas en construir y crear esta casa y fortaleza gigantesca sólo para utilizarla durante tres días de rodaje! Por cierto, Beorn es un personaje muy grande de tamaño y conocido como un "cambiador de piel" que puede convertirse en un gigantesco oso negro.

Muchos de los trajes de la película también fueron exhibidos. Y como si la experiencia no hubiese sido suficientemente maravillosa, todas las madres bloggeras recibimos una fabulosa bolsa de regalos al final de la gira.

Este fin de semana es la gran apertura de la película Hobbit : La Desolación de Smaug. Tal parece que será un éxito en la taquilla. Si te estás preguntando si debes o no ir a verla, me limitaré a repetir las palabras de una colega bloggera que dijo que ésta es una película buena para las mamás, porque trata los temas de la lealtad, la supervivencia, la fuerza mental, cómo vencer la adversidad y luchar por lo que es correcto.

Ahora si nunca has oído hablar de The Hobbit, quizá te interese saber que todo comenzó con un libro escrito por el escritor Inglés, JRR Tolkien. El primer párrafo del libro dice así:
"En un agujero en el suelo vivía un hobbit. No era un agujero desagradable, ni sucio o mojado, ó lleno de gusanos y olor cenagoso, ni tampoco un agujero seco, desnudo y arenoso, sin nada en él para sentarse o comer: era un agujero para un hobbit y eso representa comodidad".
La extraordinaria historia que se desenrrolla después de esta introducción es un mundo de aventuras y seguramente la película lo demostrará.
