The King Arthur Carrousel at Disneyland

The King Arthur Carrousel inside Fantasyland is one of the park's original attractions.
It was purchased by Walt Disney in 1954 and installed and ready to take its first set of passengers the next year for Disneyland's opening day.
The ride has gone through a whole lot of refurbishments and repairs because the actual carousel was built in 1875!
Disney historical books tell that Walt Disney wanted a carousel in his theme park similar to the one located in L.A.'s Griffith Park.
So he looked everywhere until he found one that he considered perfect for the job. It was a grand and ornate 72-horse wooden carousel that had been operating at Sunnyside Amusement Park in Toronto, Canada since 1922.
When the carousel was brought to Anaheim, not all horses were "jumpers" meaning, not all horses moved up and down...but Mr. Disney wanted every rider to experience the motion of a jumping horse and so the carousel was altered to make that happen.
Disneyland's King Arthur Carrousel is maintained daily and repainted several times a month due to wear and tear.
Other interesting facts:
1. You can get a list of all horses' names at City Hall on Main Street.
2. Every horse is hand carved and no two horses are identical
3. Today, the carousel features 68 jumping horses
4. The lead horse is named Jingles, and is considered a park ambassador :)
5. On his first time aboard the King Arthur Carrousel, my son Benny rode on "Red Devil"...LOL!
I hope you have a new appreciation for this gorgeous and historic attraction...I know I do!

Back in the day I used to work this attraction (along with the surrounding ones). It was definitely a "kickback" attraction and there was always someone waiting to hop aboard. At one time we were able to jump onto the platform as it rotated, but that was taken away circa 2001.
